I would love to teach you to play fiddle music that is deeply rooted in southern Appalachian styles, especially from regions in Kentucky, the Virginias, and North Carolina - traditional music that I�ve played and taught for decades. My approach is based on understanding and developing a fiddling vocabulary, to help you learn to "speak the language" more fluently and expressively. Because this is traditional roots music, I teach primarily by ear using a tune-based approach, with special focus on phrasing the music in a way that sounds like authentic old-time fiddling. Students will learn tunes that are set in both standard and alternate violin tunings. I'm happy to work with folks who have had no formal violin study as well as those looking to make the leap from classical training to folk fiddling, with serious students of any age. Since the 1980s I've performed and recorded with old-time string bands such as Leftwich, Higginbotham and Jackson, The Rhythm Rats, and Big Medicine, and I also recorded a solo CD several years ago.
